the big diamond jubilee lunch - part 2 - Updated June 4th 2012
While the hat judging was progressing The Hursley Butchers had the barbecue up to full temperature and were cooking up the chicken and sausages in the front of the barn
Not that anybody was in any rush Caroline Roe and David Pilgrim were enjoying a chat and . . .

. . . June and Peggy were almost pleased to be pestered by your photographer

Some very ornate headgear was being flaunted by the Gaston Lane division
Food was being served at the salad bar by the volunteers and . . . . .
.....the butchers were dishing out the meat course, now how did these three manage to get there before me!
The conversation volume decreased as everybody tucked in to the first course
To follow, the second course awaits, served at the table this time after a well organised system swung into place to clear the dishes from the first course and distribute the second
Mind you, heaven help those who ask for more!
Now while all this was going on your reporter noticed that someone had conjured up a second flagpole, sited beside the outside facilities, to complement the permanent version at Fielders Barn.
Flagpoles are not easily obtainable at short notice, especially when every flag in the country is deployed as part of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations.
If you look at the two pictures below, you may spot a subtle difference, especially if you are aware that the one on the left was taken on Saturday while the second one was taken on the day of the lunch
When your reporter made subtle
( I know this is hard to believe )
enquiries as to the source of the aforementioned flagpole he found himself under fire, now I don't want to point the finger but . . . . .
With the meal over it was time to draw the raffle, with a specially selected team of drawers, ( of the raffle variety ) carefully arranged in ascending order by MC Horton.
After a vote of thanks to everybody from the MC and the Chairman of the Farringdon Parish Council and a loyal Toast to Her Majesty The Queen. there followed a spirited rendering of Land of Hope and Glory and Rule Britannia.
All in all, a very enjoyable and successful lunch. Congratulations to all those who organised the event, prepared the food, moved tables, raised funds, decorated the barn, provided transport and turned out to make the Farringdon Jubilee Lunch such an outstanding success.
My lasting impression of the day was the slap of surplus coleslaw hitting the concrete after a touch of finger trouble while clearing up.
Also the baby Little Owl that was discovered by the clear up team in the corner of the barn is still being fed by the parent birds as it had a very full stomach on Tuesday morning!
