Hampshire Police & Crime Commissioner Election - Updated 23nd June 2019

The results of the PCC Election have now been published and if you are interested some sort of result is published on the right.

For some reason the votes for two of the candidates in the fiirst ballot have not been published on the official site so only vote numbers for the two who went forward for the second ballot are available.

The voting system seems to be unnecessarily complicated as, for various reasons, (listed below right) a surprisingly large number of ballot papers, 12,777 to be precise, were rejected.

Hampshire PCC Election 2921

Candidate

!st Vote 2nd Vote
Steve James Bailey ????
Anthony Wyatt Bunday 10,1832 43,919
Donna Jones (Elected) 262,667 50,326
Richard Fintan Murphy ????

I'm sure somebody can fathom the reasoning that decided the first past the post system should be cast aside for the PCC election, but I suspect a sizeable proportion of the electorate would take some convincing.

This election of a "Commissioner" doesn't seem to evoke much interest among voters and adding unnecessary complications to the voting process, especially one which results in sizeable proportion of votes cast being invalidated, is probably not going to encourage many to change their views.

We can only hope that the 2022 Council Tax Demand doesn't include another sizeable increase in the budget of the newly appointed Commissioner!
