FARRINGDON FLOODWATCH . . . . . . updated 1st Jan 2007

Thanks to David Hartley we now have an update on groundwater levels in Lower Farringdon. Using sophisticated digital technology we can now offer some reassurance that despite the recent heavy rainfall there is no imminent danger of a repeat of the 2000 flood.

The state of the art measuring system has taken years to perfect and David is now able to drop the tape measure from the rim of the well to the water surface with unerring accuracy.

Whatever the method the results he has emailed to the Biz make interesting reading and for those of you who have been metricated and wish to convert from proper measurements 1 foot = 304.8mm = 0.305m

The measurements were all taken around New Years Eve and are based on how far the tape measure has to go before it touches the water.:

To quote David:

" The water table is a bit higher than the last three years but nowhere near the critical yet. At 6 feet the cellar starts to flood and what is now the Chase Field kickabout area, would be starting to flood. Historically, I think it usually reaches its highest point about the end of January "

Thanks to David for the information, after all the recent rain it will be interesting to see what effect this has on the water levels in the Hartley Well.
