TREKKING THROUGH THE VALLEY. . . Updated 12th December 2007

The Intrepid Trekkers have now returned unscathed from the Great Rift Valley and Sue Andersen has provided a brief update and pictures.

WE DID IT!! OUR HIKE FOR HOPE CHALLENGE IS COMPLETE.

Susie Hexton, Sonia Ranger and I joined a party of 90, organised by Action for Charity. A back up team transported our tents, fed us, drove us where we couldn't walk, guided us across the African savannah and protected us against angry buffalo and inquisitive baboons!

The tents were small and totally crammed with our inexperienced camper's clutter. There were limited facilities, no loos or running water but we were compensated (or distracted!) by the stunning views over the valley complete with grazing giraffes, zebra and buffalo. As well as the long walks in the intense heat - 100km in 7 days - we abseiled down a rock face into a gorge and climbed Mount Longanot, an extinct volcano.

The terrain we covered varied from dry and thick with dust to lush fertile farmland. The African people we met along the way welcomed us warmly. But what was truly special was the companionship of our fellow walkers. Many were recovering from cancer, more were walking in memory of those that had died and some, like us, felt humbled and privileged to be part of this fund raising event. Emotions swung from high to low, but there was always someone nearby to provide comfort and a good story to lift your spirits.

So, we really want to say a big thank you for supporting us in our mad adventure. With your help we managed to raise over £19 000 and, with donations still coming in, we are optimistic that we might reach the amazing total of £20 000. Hike for Hope overall raised in excess of £280 000 which will benefit the two charities, Prostate Research UKand Wellbeing of Women.
