SUMMER SHOW 2010- Updated 7th August 2010

The last day of July saw the pick of flowers and vegetables from the gardens of Farringdon transported to the Village Hall for the Farringdon Horticultural Society Summer Show.

With a selection of trophies up for grabs it was the task of Jadges:Mark Ward, (Flower and Vegetable entries) Priscilla Wedderburn-Maxwell (Homecraft) and Serena Bone (Handicraft and Childrens' entries) to sort out the winners.

Although overall entries were slightly down this year the vegetable clases were well supported with a variety of produce and multiple entries in most classes.

Show Chairman Phyllis Watts took top honours overall for the second year running, picking up both The Summer Show Challenge Cup and The Farringdon Residents Cup for the most points overall in Vegetable and Flower Classes.

As the show opened in the afternoon, the exhibits were soon
under the scrutiny of fellow gardeners keen to see which
entries had caught the eye of the Judge

Pat Moss was pleased to find that his entry in the Onion Class had not only been awarded a first in the class
but also a special award as the best Exhibit in the Vegetable classes

Tim Charrington, Farringdon Horticultural Society President, was this years winner of The Challenge Cup for best overall points in the Fruit and Vegetable section

In the Flower Classes the Challenge Cup for the Highest points overall went to Dawn Perry

Best exhibit in the Show was this orchid entered by Joan Watts

The only entry in the Floral Art Class was this spectacular offering from Mo Giles on a theme of "Red, White and Blue"

Certainly the most successful family this year were the Schryver girls with Sophie taking the taking top honours in the Novice Class while in the Handicraft section Sophie was again in first place with sister Lucy in equal second with Mo Giles.

In the Childrens Section Lucy took first place in the Miniature Garden Competition (see pictures below) with Charlotte a close second

The miniature gardens were spectacular this year with an equine theme dominant in this entry. Close examination suggests the going was on the soft side but this garden has an unusual whiff of authenticity with one character removing genuine offerings from a passing rabbit from the show ring.

No horses here but there is a lot going on in this garden, could this be the rabbit providing employment for the character in the show ring?

Different going altogether with this one on an alien world (background courtesy of the Farringdon Intergalactic Research Committee) featuring alien beings, spacemen and some imaginative geological and floral additions.
