FARRINGDON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SPRING SHOW - updated 5th April 2009

For once your reporter, having resisted the temptation to drop in the local hostelry en route, was on time for the afternoon opening of the Spring Show and found all but one of the Horticultural Society Dignitiaries enjoying the sunshine in the old school playground - unfortunately the absentee was the Chairman who was the only member entitled to carry the key to the Village Hall

With an unprecedented burst of athleticism your reporter scuttled round to Church Road to witness the unhurried approach and official opening of the Hall by the Miss Phyllis Watts

Once the doors were open Exhibitors were soon taking a turn around the table to see how their blooms had fared under the scrutiny of the judges

Joan Watts and Tony Causton are sharing opinions at the far end of the table while Brian Williams is almost a blur as he moves round at high speed to check on all his entries .

Brian and Catherine were carrying out a close inspection of the miniature daffodils, note that Catherine has discarded the radioactive jacket of the morning in favour of her official Tea Lady outfit for the afternoon session.

Meanwhile, in the red corner, Phyllis was operating the state of the art public display system, posting up the dates for the next Horticultural event, an evening meeting of the Society in the Village Hall on the 27th May at 7.30 pm, when Geoff Hawkins will be the guest speaker.

The Crows Lane contingent Pat, Pam, Chris and Anne, were checking their results but if Pat was disappointed with his Horticultural prizes, his shrewd purchases on the raffle ticket scheme were shortly to be rewarded . . . .

. . . .when he was the lucky winner of the star prize in the raffle which, for some inexplicable reason, many earlier winners had forsaken for mundane bottles of wine and boxes of chocolates. This finely crafted plastic edifice which, despite Pat's optimism is completely devoid of any alcoholic content, is of course the Farringdon Recycling Jug which will no doubt live up to it's name when it reappears in a future village raffle.

Close by, the Cave family discovered that Lilly's entry had won a far more prestigious award, taking first prize in the the Children's Class for a magnificent posy of spring flowers.

Overall Prizewinner was Phyllis Watts with Brian Williams in second place, both seen seen here in a mutual presentation ceremony, with Mary Ewin in third place overall.

All this excitement was too much for the smallest member of the Cave family who decided that a timely snooze was the best way to end the afternoon.
