FARRINGDON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SPRING SHOW - updated 5th April 2009

The Spring sunshine certainly brought out the Farringdon Gardeners for the Horticultural Society Spring Show, with entry numbers boosted by the spell of warm weather, the new Horticultural Secretary, Stuart Tye, had a busy morning keeping up with the paperwork while Pat Moss scrutinises his details.

Obviously not everybody was under stress, Brian Williams was taking the opportunity to down a warming beverage while keeping a careful eye on the opposition, as Jenny Sloper wheels in a a triple entry of spring flowers in assorted containers.

The sight of a cup of tea sent your reporter in search of Catherine Cameron's Catering services, to find her glowing in anticipation of the afternoon festivities. Her excellent services were slightly handicapped by a lack of hot water on tap in the kitchen for washing up (VHMC please note) but as always, service was excellent and we had a chance to catch up on what was going on in the village.

Suitably refreshed, there was a chance to take a closer look at some of this years 118 exhibits, which Brian Williams, having finished his cup of tea, informs me is the highest number of entries since 1996. I shall make no attempt to identify these blooms to avoid any repeat of the errors from a previous attempt some years ago, which prompted emails from an irate FHS member who suggested that your reporter would almost certainly experience difficulty in differentiating between the elbow and other more intimate body parts.

The tables were filling with a variety of offerings from the gardens and greenhouses of Farringdon as the 10.30 deadline approached, but there was still time for the Misses Cave to make the final adjustments to their entries in the children's class, with a little help from Asa.

As always there was a last minute rush so Mr and Mrs Burr, the judges for the day had time for a quick reconaissance before beginning the serious business of judging.

With judging under way your reporter made off across the village border for a light lunch in the 'biz' production centre before returning for the reopening of the Hall for the afternoon session
