HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SPRING SHOW - updated 14th April 2008
Long experience has taught your reporter that the 2:30 opening time is more an ambition than a reality and this year was no exception, so it was no surprise to find the security detachment were only just in position when I arrived around a quarter to three.
A rapid side-step was required as the very welcome catering manager arrived, taking pains to avoid the open topped Rolls in the car park as she wheelied her way along the Barn Piazza.
Catherine, as always, was fully equipped to cope with the logistics of providing refreshment to the masses despite the somewhat spartan facilities available in the Barn
By now a number of Exhibitors had begun to arrive to see how their prize blooms had held up under the expert scrutiny of The Judge and to see if any of those coveted red labels were heading their way

A reshuffling of exhibits was required to sort out a slight confusion among the Daffodils (and before any incriminating accusations are made your reporter was entirely innocent of any involvement) but the affected parties soon sorted the problem out and the Stewards were able to match the cards with the correct entries.
No such problems at the other end of the table where a scattering of red and blue cards could be seen

One or two present moved out side to make the most of the sunshine and mull over the success, or otherwise, of their exhibits

A more effective alternative to keep out the chill was a coffee from the the Catherine's Catering department. Bearing in mind the facilities in the background are non functional, intake had to be rationed to avoid the long walk to the Hall, especially as it was nearly time for the Raffle draw
Always an essential part of the days events, the Raffle offers an opportunity to gain a prize with no gardening expertise required.
Having a ticket drawn always raises the knotty problem of which prize to choose, however, there are always others on hand to offer advice when there is a difficult choice to make between a bottle of wine and those useful items which bear a remarkable resemblance to the ones that were there last year.
No such problem for Catherine who went home with the prize she brought, but promising faithfully to recycle it at the next show raffle, you never know, somebody might take it out of circulation next time.
Finally it was time for the presentations to the overall winner and runner up based on points accumulated over all the classes.
This year it was an the ladies who took the honours with the runners up prize going to Lorraine Mills just a point or two behind . . .
. . . the overall Winner, Caroline Roe, seen here receiving
the coveted Diploma from Phyll Watts
The next event in the Horticultural calendar will be the Summer Show in August
