HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SPRING SHOW - updated 14th April 2008
The Spring Show in Manor Barn was the destination for the dedicated horticulturists of Farringdon last Saturday (12th) or, to be accurate, the lucky few who managed to find blooms that had survived the recent frosts, wind, rain and gales.
Despite the battering over recent weeks, a creditable number of entries were on display by the time your reporter arrived and, with about half an hour to go before the doors closed for the all important judging, there was just a trickle of last minute entries to be put on display
One slight disappointment this year was the lack of any entries in the Children's class but no doubt there will more support from the younger competitors for the Summer Show later in the year.
The coffee provided by Catherine was very welcome as the temperature inside the barn was hardly Spring like and even outside in the sunshine there was a chilly breeze that kept the temperature down. While taking a few pictures to pad out the lamentable lack of text in this report it became apparent that there appeared to be a wide variety of receptacles employed by exhibitors to show off their specimens to best advantage.
Milk bottles were popular choice for the longer stems, although I suspect using them for this purpose is probably prohibited under one or possibly an arsenal of European regulations and will no doubt lead to covert surveillance of the offenders by the the Recycling Gestapo, Greenbottle or Friends of the Pinta now evidence has been published of this grave misdemeanour.
The Primulas generally occupied rather more tasteful premises with a variation on the vase theme being the most popular mode of display in this class.

I am not sure that this container is politically correct either, but now the recent tax rises have reduced the frequency of refilling of the intended contents alternative uses have to be found. While your reporter was wandering off into a world of his own ( much to the relief of almost everybody else in the Barn ) The Officers of the Horticultural Society were preparing to close up for the all important Judging.
There was brief consultation between Chrys Brian and Phyll as to whether there should be a few minutes grace for the inevitable late entry, but when Brian's watch showed half past ten and a bit, Judge Mr B Newman (second left) swung into action among the blooms.

Leaving the milk bottles aside for the moment the Judge began his deliberations with a studied examination of a clear glass vase, although I have a suspicion, his interest was directed to the blooms contained therein.

With so much at stake your reporter removed himself from the immediate area and set off home to ponder on the mornings events and prepare for the public opening in the afternoon, leaving the various official personages, including Show secretary Carole, (second from rt) to fulfil their duties and add up the all important points for the presentation later in the afternoon.
