SPRING SHOW IN THE BARN- Updated 23rd April 2007

Soaking up the sunshineThanks to the generosity of Hugh Bevan the Manor Barn was the venue for the 2007 Spring Show staged by the Farringdon Horticultural Society in unseasonably warm sunshine.

It is probably easier to pick the winner of the Grand national than select the ideal date for this show and this year the high temperatures in the preceding weeks had reduced the entry in some classes but the later flowering blooms were well represented.

The new logo was prominently displayed outside the door to encourage entries from the ever competitive gardeners of Farringdon. A a special parking area was provided for ecologically sound means of transport employed by some entrants.
These blooms provided an attractive display (just to avoid any misunderstanding the blooms are in the foreground) and a topic of conversation for the combined intellect of David, Catherine (taking a break from the tea counter) and Jenny mull over the judges decision and try to ignore the idiot with the 'Biz' digital.
Have you heard the one about . . . .

The pot grown classes were well supported and provide an attractive display marred only by the three principals of the Saturday Club lurking behind them although the subject under discussion by this trio is probably an area into which I would rather not venture, with or without a hat.
A more refined discussion beyond the Forest of Ewin

Fortunately a rather more refined conversation was being conducted on the other side of the Barn with another selection from the pot grown classes in the foreground.
A pound a strip and no discounts for folding your own

As ever, Show Secretary Carole Williams was maintaining order and heavily engaged in the marketing and folding of raffle tickets ready for the imminent draw.
Why did you have to pick that one

Horticultural C-in-C Phyl Watts was in charge of this procedure with expert ticket extraction by Catherine who, despite being featured regularly in the Biz news, was generous enough to draw out your reporters ticket, albeit after all bottles of booze had disappeared from the table.

As the time for the Official Awards Ceremony approached tension was building up and the audience were quivering with anticipation. (Although it might possibly be camera shake after the excitement of winning a raffle prize)
Best in Show

With the raffle completed it was time for the awards ceremony and Best Exhibit award went to Kate Causton for her entry in the tulip class and, a rare event this, the winning entry was captured for posterity by your photographer.
Max receives his prize from Phyl Wats

Max taylor was the recipient of the Childrens award and, much more true to form, I must apologise for failing to catch a usable image of this entry due to the photographic incompetence. Apologies to Master Taylor.
First and Second prizewinners in the same frame

When the points were all totted up, Caroline Roe took second Place overall with two class wins one second place and four third places

While the top gardener at the 2007 Spring Show was Phyl Watts, with three class wins, one second place and one third in class.

Phyll was spared the embarrassment of presenting the prize to herself when Brian Williams stepped forward to do the honours.

With the awards completed it was time to clear up and for entrants to reclaim their prized exhibits from the stands. I rather think the Ewin Maple is in need of a bit of attention, it doesn't seem to be much bigger than last year.
Genuine Horticultural Footwear I didn't know Molly Malone wore Glasses.Having retrieved his wheelbarrow Ian set off for the long journey home closely followed by the only pair of wellies seen during the afternoons events

Thanks to the incredible efficiency of Secretary Carole Williams the Individual and Class results are shown below.
