Carbon neutral housing is all the rage at the moment and Farringdon is way ahead of the competition, news and pictures have reached the Biz showing a dwelling constructed in Gaston Lane using renewable materials available locally all of which can be 100% recycled. Too good to be true? There's more, a legal loophole allows construction without involving local planners or entering into the planning lottery set up by the South Downs National Park consultation executives.

Firm and secure footings are essentialThe house was built in three days, using local labour with no specialist tools and was completed just before Christmas in the grounds of the Vicarage.

Hattie and Josh are seen here working on the foundations with Eliot checking the dimensions. The building materials was all sourced within walking distance so transport and construction costs were almost zero apart from a supply of hot beverages for the builders.
Care and skill required

Tony and Gill were called in at various stages to provide logistical and technical support and before long the complex vaulting over the entrance lobby was completed.

The unusual circular plan is a feature of the design, maximising the floor area available from the materials available to give a minimalist studio style interior.

Welcome to my new home

On the third day the dwelling was finally completed and handed over to to new resident in time to provide the venue for an exclusive carol service just before Christmas.

Notice how well the building blends in with the environment, proof that with a sympathetic design, local materials and skills and suitable weather conditions new builds can enhance an area of outstanding national beauty.

Thanks to the Pears family for pictures and information.

Have you seen this building

Footnote:
It was planned to conduct guided tours of the property but we understand the building has mysteriously disappeared and despite the best efforts of the neighbourhood watch no trace can be found in the immediate area.

Rumours than it was carted off on the back of a council gritting lorry are unfounded as only one vehicle was seen passing through the village during the recent snowy weather and the operator seemed more concerned with preventing any of the contents being applied to the icy lanes than removing property from the vicarage garden
