THE FARRINGDON EASTER GOLF TOURNAMENT 2009 - Updated April 18th 2009
While the likes of Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Lee Westwood were playing in some minor tournament in the United States the most prestigious competition this year was about to get underway on the hallowed greens of the Internationally renowned Alresford Golf Club.
On a glorious Easter Monday, the cream of the Farringdon Golfing fraternity were once again selflessly sacrificing the opportunity to catch up on household chores to compete in the internationally renowned Farringdon Golf Tournament.
Now, as the reader of previous golf reports on these pages will testify, your reporter knows very little about anything and even less about golf. In previous years this handicap has been partially overcome, by trailing the competitors around the course, picking up a few words of enlightenment and taking pictures when the opportunity permits. This year, after receipt of a cunningly worded invitation from his other half, with implied threats of severe penalties for non attendance, your reporter was obliged to forego the excitement of the tournament and enjoy a joyous day visiting non blood relations in a coastal town, sited on the wrong side of Portsmouth Harbour and boasting a multitude of features to depress the visitor, even on a sunlit Easter Monday.
Fortunately one noble competitor, Slasher 'The Hat' Williams, a former winner of this event, sacrificed his chances for a repeat success (it should be pointed out that this view was not unanimously endorsed by his fellow competitors) by doubling up as the official 'Biz' photographer, deploying his Canon Powershot during the tournament.(To avoid any misunderstanding this is a digital camera not one of Slasher's extensive repertoire of unique golfing strokes)
As usual the players gathered for the traditional foreplay on an area adjacent to the first tee, where Tiger Burton, Tournament Manager (in the diamond encrusted cardigan), revealed who would be playing with whom in groups of four. Not an easy task when the total number of competitors is eleven, thanks to a late withdrawal of one party due to self inflicted digital injury, of which more in the Dinner Report
Tiger's mathematical calculations require considerable concentration, a state of mind that is difficult to achieve when in close proximity to the trousers concealing the diminutive presence of the former Laird of Macduff who, after a couple of years absence, returned to the competition from his current abode in the far North of Scotland which, your reporter understands, was the home town of the infamous "Four and Twenty Virgins" whose fall from grace are celebrated in the popular song.
Despite these diversions play was eventually underway with the various stars of the Tournament displaying a variety of individual driving styles in their efforts to propel the ball in the general direction of the first hole
After some time and various excursions to play in the sandpits thoughtfully provided around the course, the competitors arrived at the all important nineteenth hole.
Here there was a prolonged pause for suitable refreshment, free of the pressures of competition, an activity that seems to meet the approval of all the competitors particularly Wildfire Wallace, seen here enjoying a refreshing glass of lemonade to celebrate the completion of the course while his fellow competitors make full use of the outside seating.
At a nearby table, more of Farringdon's finest were also imbibing the refreshing beverages on offer at the nineteenth, although the Former Laird seems to have received a postcard from home and can that be Tiger about to settle the account?.
For those patrons of the Rose and Crown who were wondering why a slightly restricted menu was in operation on Easter Monday, Landlord Russ Parker (left) had taken a day off from the kitchen to make his first appearance in the competition seen here in the company of, Martin Bonsey, the Former Laird of Macduff and Brian Orchard while Tiger Burton further tests his mathematical prowess calculating the results of the team and individual competitions.
With formalities completed the competitors retired for a brief respite bbefore making their way to the Rose and Crown for the traditional post match festivities
Thanks to Slasher 'The Hat' Williams for providing the images on this page.
