THE PRESTIGIOUS 2007 FARRINGDON GOLF TOURNAMENT- Updated April 14th 2006
The Easter Monday Farringdon Golf Tournament is now established as one of the most prestigious sporting events in the local calendar when several of the finest golfers in Farringdon assemble in company with a number of other players from the village and assault a local golf course. Once again Alresford was the venue for this feast of golfing prowess.
On a glorious morning your reporter arrived at the first tee (Note the golfing terminology) in an endeavour to make some sort of a report on the proceedings. The players were sent round in threes, presumably so that there are always two available to lean on their golf bags and offer helpful criticism to the current player, so the first hurdle to negotiate is the draw.
Arriving too late to witness this ritual, I am reliably informed that players inscribe one of their balls with an identifying mark and place it in a suitable receptacle. (I'm beginning to feel that a late arrival was a wise move) where upon a given signal the balls are retrieved by a nominated expert in ball identification to establish who will be playing with whom.
For most a simple initial will identify the owner of the ball, so quite how one ball inscribed with the legend "PRAT" came to be included is a bit of a mystery. To save embarrassment I shall not name the player involved but the ball was immediately identified by young Benjamin, his caddy for the event.
First three away, to a leisurely start, were John Allan, Graham Enser and Slasher "the Hat" Williams, seen here discussing tactics before the off.
When they did eventually get away a lost ball caused some delay and for some time Slasher's head gear was seen aimlessly wandering (presumably with the owner firmly attached below) along the horizon in the quest for his colleagues lost equipment while the following threesomes were waiting to start their rounds.
Behind them the other competitors were making the most of the sunshine as they patiently awaited their turn. Tiger Burton is off for a round of the practice green as being last away in the company of Martin Bonsey and Jim Adcock it would be an afternoon start at the present rate of progress.
I hesitate to make a guess which minuscule object Baron Fuller is describing to Lord Maltby and Tony Causton, the Baron's spellbound playing partners, but I suspect the owner of this accoutrement would be feeling a trifle inadequate had he been within earshot.
Whatever the subject the players must have been inspired as this trio were the eventual winners of the Team Competition.
Your reporter was under strict orders to make a rapid return home to receive visitors so I was unable to enjoy the full variety of skills displayed by the Farringdon golfers as they made their way around the course but I was on hand for the awards dinner held in the Rose and Crown the following evening. However I have added a selection of styles off the tee with a trio of competitors in action from left to right Lord Maltby, Slasher "the Hat" Williams and Baron Fuller
