BETTER LATE THAN NEVER . . Updated 23rd March 2011
One could be forgiven for being a trifle confused, (nothing new to your reporter) to find the Farringdon Over 60's Christmas Dinner organisers making their way to the Village Hall on the 19th March.
The appalling weather in December last year forced the organisers to postpone the traditional Christmas event and so the Turkey Dinner was (without the Sprouts and Christmas Pudding) held in the middle of March.
Slightly lower numbers than usual attended but none the less a very tasty meal was served up by the various members of the Andrews family ably assisted by the team of volunteer waiters and waitresses
Once again despite geographical disqualification, your reporter managed to slip into a vacant seat and enjoy the an excellent meal in good company, although the company in question might not necessarily hold the same view of your reporter.
In the kitchen the usual volunteers set in to the washing up despite the disruption caused by the intrusion of your reporter into the proceedings.
All too soon it was time to head home and Molly and Pam, along with the rest of the diners made their way home on a much warmer evening than is usual for this event.
Thanks to all those who helped to make this event possible each year, especially a personal thanks to their generosity in allowing your reporter to join them for a very enjoyable evening.
Sadly there was one very notable absentee at this event. Vecta Mitchell, who has been an enthusiastic fund raiser and contributor to this event over many years sadly passed away just the week before only a few weeks short of her 99th birthday. Despite her age she was very active in village affairs and all rural activities and the huge number of people that filled Selborne Church beyond capacity for her Memorial Service on the 25th was a fitting farewell to a unique countrywoman.
Never one to miss out on a bit of fun this was Vecta, as always with appropriate headgear, at last years Farringdon D-Day Celebrations.
