The Farringdon Neighbourhood Watch is one of many community Neighbourhood Watch Associations in Hampshire which aim to provide a source of information and advice to villagers on any aspect of crime or anti-social behaviour to help maintain a safe environment.
Farringdon and many of our neighbouring villages and communities are members of the Alton District Neighbourhood Watch Association which is a division of the Hampshire NWA. Hampshire Constabulary have a Police Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator to collate and exchange information and advice from all parts of the County.
The village is a Neighbourhood Watch area and households within the area are welcome to participate. The intention is to promote a community that is friendly but alert to visitors, traffic and anything unusual. We are fortunate that Farringdon has a relatively low level of crime and our intention is to keep it that way. Participating in the Neighbourhood Watch scheme is entirely optional.
So how does it work? Participating households keep an eye on neighbours' properties, take obvious but polite notice of strangers, unfamiliar vehicles, suspicious and unusual occurrences and contact the police if and as appropriate, using 999 for emergencies or 0845 045 45 45 for non-emergencies. At the same they inform their Area Coordinator who then passes on the information to the Scheme Coordinator where appropriate.
Iain Ross (tel: 588-349) is the Scheme Coordinator and represents the village at the District and County level. Participants of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme will receive notice of any alerts, incidents and anti-social behaviour. Periodically bulletins with advice on safety and other pertinent matters will be published in the parish magazine and the village website. Meetings are held as and when necessary with the Area Coordinators to which Farringdon residents are welcome.
As the only practical way of expeditiously advising participants of crimes, suspicious incidents and anti-social behaviour, etc. is by email, the Scheme maintains a computerised database containing their email address. In addition, it contains the name(s), postal address, telephone number and mobile numbers (optional) so that, if a resident is not contactable by email there is another means of contact. We are currently in the process of organising a system where households with email addresses will pass on the contents of bulletins to their immediate neighbours who do not have an email address.
If you have not provided the aforementioned details and want to be included in the database please email nhwfarringdon@btinternet.com with the required information or provide them to your Area Coordinator.
Details on the database are strictly confidential and are solely held for the purpose of providing you with information associated with the Scheme.
A list of Area Coordinators is available from Ian Ross (contact details below)
There are no charges or costs to participating householders. We have no budget or accounts. Some insurance companies give a rebate for households participating in a NHW scheme.
Why do we need Neighbourhood Watch? Our aim is to keep residents informed and aware and discourage any individual or group of individuals who might be contemplating criminal or anti-social behaviour. Farringdon is a peaceful and friendly village with very little crime and the Farringdon Neighbourhood Watch have every intention of keeping it that way.
