NEW TRUSTEES TAKE OVER THE FOLLY- updated Apr 29th 2005
On Wednesday 26th April the final meeting of the Farringdon Village Hall Management Committee took place in front of a large contingent of villagers assembled in the Folly.
Members of the current VHMC resigned to clear the way for the newly elected Farringdon Village hall Trustees to take over the future management of the Village Hall and, if sufficient funds can be raised, this responsibility will be extended to include the entire building.
John Prynne, Chairman of the VHMC went through the formal proceedings of the AGM thanking all of the current committee members for their efforts during the year.
The VHMC has managed to increase the income from hire of the Hall, although some long term bookings were lost during the year due to uncertainties about the future and the, now defunct, plans to realign the division between the Village Hall and the western end of the Folly.
The
major expenditure for the year was the impending bill for removal of the
mound of bird droppings from the feral pigeons that had been squatting in
the tower. Contractors are currently clearing up the mess after the openings
in the tower were blocked off to prevent the birds nesting. Fortunately
there appears to be no serious damage to the fabric of the building and
it is hoped that this should bring and end to the problems the pigeons were
causing.
Next on the Agenda was the proposed Constitution for under which the Massey's Folly Preservation Trust would operate. The draft constitution met with general approval with just one clause under question which became the major discussion point for the evening.
Ian Dussek, was the spokesman selected to express some concern over section 7.1 of the draft paper which read:
"Membership is open to individuals over eighteen, or organisations in Farringdon and the surrounding area who are approved by the Trustees"
The proposal was to restrict voting rights to Farringdon residents, an amendment to ensure that the Village Hall would remain in the control of the village. The great majority of those present were in support of this proposal although there was some discussion as to whether voting rights should be restricted to those on the electoral role. At this point the discussion became somewhat confused but eventually it was decided to amend the offending paragraph to limit voting rights to any person over the age of eighteen resident within the parish boundary.
The motion was passed with a large majority, although I suspect the majority would have been even greater if some of the abstainers had realised that this amendment disenfranchised your reporter.
All
those who had put their names forward were elected, as Farringdon Village
Hall Trustees, who will take over the day to day running and management
of the The Villlage Hall. Three of those trustees, with the addtion of Mary
Roberts have been appointed as Trustees of the Massey's Folly Preservation
Trust who will eventually hold title to the building, at such time as the
purchase of the western end of the Folly is completed. Just to make sureyou
know who they are the trustees are pictured below
